St Olaf’s Lutheran Church in Nõva
Dear Wayfarer,

As you hold this guide to Estonian churches, you also hold a piece of Estonian soul. You can feel its heartbeats, share in its joys and sorrows, suffering and hope. You can experience a part of its everyday life. Can we imagine the number of people, who went out to face their cruel destiny after having taken a last look at their church; or the people for whom their local church is the last memory of their dear and distant homeland? How many would have liked, but were unable, to see their church once more before their death?

A church is not simply a meeting place. It is a manifestation of the congregation that lives in this place. It is a residence of God among the people reconciled and unified by Christ. It is a house of prayer. It is not built only of stones, but also of all the thoughts and emotions born in the hearts of numerous people over the years. Those are the living stones that bestow this place with its special warmth and meaning.

Dear Wayfarer, as you enter a church, remember the words of the Scripture: “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer’” (Luke 19:46). Please take a moment to give a gift of thought and prayer to those who have been here before and who have built this church. They will thank you for this!

Bishop Philippe Jourdan
Vice-President of the Estonian Council of Churches
