The Door Is Open – Step In!

Dear fellow wayfarer,

The doors of Wayfarers’ Churches are open to you all over Estonia. The present booklet and the related website usher you in across the thresholds of known and unknown churches alike. Be you a believer or a disbeliever, the sanctuaries await you with open doors.

The threshold of a sanctuary may sometimes seem unsurpassably high. Crossing it may look like surpassing yourself. If you do, however, you will find yourself in a spacetime where the significance of stopping transcends both time and space. In a sanctuary, one can apprehend sanctity. In the holiest, sanctity attains supreme significance.

“I am the Lord, and there is none else”, the Most High addressed a world ruler thousands of years ago, “there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:5-6, KJV)

If we have the same Creator, could He have a message for you, and also for me? And if sanctuaries have been built, maintained and opened to hear, and be heard by, Him, could the best time and place for that be found precisely in church buildings open to wayfarers?

Today, many people travel across distant lands and seas to find themselves on a journey of introspection and supplication. The Estonian Council of Churches invites you to an exploration and pilgrimage through Terra Mariana by means of picking sanctuaries passed down to the people of Estonia by the country’s forefathers and foremothers as your destinations and stopovers. Wayfarers’ Churches serve as an open roadsign to each wayfarer and pilgrim.

Wishing you and your wayfaring companions inspired approaches, blessed journeys, shared travel experiences – on land, under the open sky, in the sanctity of a sanctuary,

Meego Remmel
